caravan786: designers with a message...

there is a new -- dare i say, against their wishes -- fashion label in town. it is called "caravan786" and their moto? a sufi saying, "the dogs bark, but the caravan moves on!"

the label, which is designed by a pair of sufis called rahal x and dounya souzani, is a true fair trade production. a lot of their stuff is traditionally hand embroidered and trailed in morocco, while the rest are dyed by women in mauritania and then (wax resist) block printed.

the clothes themselves are of rich quality, many of them recreated. but the most awesome thing about their collection is the message they embody. it is all about peace. peace signs, peaceful words... some of the items, for example, feature "peace" in arabic, hebrew, and english... in perfect harmony. and 786 appears in most of everything. and if you don't know by now, 786 is the sufi tradition of numerating the "bismillah al-rahman al-rahim".

anyway, you can learn more about this cool idea by visiting their website: caravan786.com

by the way, rahal x is a queer muslim of the sufi tradition. dounya is an straight ally to the community.
