Turkish Gay Editor Faces Prison...

"Turkish Gay Editor Faces Prison

By: DOUG IRELAND

12/13/2006

The editor of Turkey's only magazine for LGBT people, who is also a leading gay activist, was indicted last week under a vague statute banning "obscene" material, and could face up to three years in prison.

The criminal case was brought against Umut Guner, 29, who is editor of Kaos GL-the magazine published by the Ankara-based LGBT association of the same name, of which he is also a vice-president-because it had dedicated its July issue to a symposium discussion of pornography, with articles by various gay writers."

"Prominent Malaysian transsexual sees progress in societal acceptance

by Sean YoongAssociated PressTuesday Dec 12, 2006

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Transsexuals are gaining more acceptance in mostly Muslim Malaysia, a well-known transsexual said Tuesday, a little more than a year after she held a high-profile but controversial wedding with an accountant.

Jessie Chung, an ethnic Chinese Malaysian who had sex-change surgery in 2003, said her country’s transsexuals are "luckier than those in some other places’’ because anti-discrimination campaigns by nongovernment groups have helped to change the way in which many people view them."

"Proposed law would outlaw gay friendships in Nigeria

In the Muslim north of Nigeria, Bisi Alimi could be stoned to death for having gay sex. In the south, he could face three years in prison. Now, a proposed law would make it illegal even to share a meal at a café with gay friends. The proposal under debate in Nigeria's house of representatives would outlaw not just same-sex marriages but any form of association between gay people, social or otherwise, and publication of any materials deemed to promote a ''same-sex amorous relationship.''

news: conservative judaism decision on gays...

"Conservative Jews on Gays: Don't Ask, Don't Kvell

It took a decision of Talmudic complexity, but gay rabbis and gay unions may now be tolerated in Judaism’s third-largest branch

By DAVID VAN BIEMA

Dec. 06, 2006

Two Jews, three opinions. It’s an old joke, but, as a decision by Judaism’s Conservative branch Wednesday on the explosive topic of gay ordination and gay unions proved, still a valid one. Two slightly differing opinions handed down by Conservatism’s Committee on Jewish Law and Standards favored maintaining the branch’s official position forbidding homosexuality. But a third, contradictory opinion, affirmed both gay unions and ordination. And all it took was one out of three to change Conservative history: any rabbi is now free to perform such a union and any seminary to make such a rabbi."

the children are waiting...

salam, friends,

today is "world aids day." in just this past week, from the world health organization study we found out that aids will be the third cause of death worldwide in 25 years. a young disease that will surpass centuries old ills.

in 2005, more than half a million children was claimed by aids. imagine that. a third of these deaths took place sub-saharan africa.

we can all help prolong the lives of hiv/aids-infected children. how? there is a great organization called "keep a child alive." this organization is amazing because 100% of your tax-deductible donations go straight to help children.

you don't have to pay much, although much is great, but even a commitment to a dollar a day can help a child live longer, healthier with this horrible disease.

i urge each and everyone of you to make a conscious effort to help.
